Jon Gruden was born in Sandusky, Ohio, on 17th August 1963. His father was a professional football regional scout for Tampa Bay Buccaneers and also served as quarterbacks coach; he also served as regional director for the team. His father is of Slovenian descent.

Growing up, Gruden was a diehard Cleveland Browns fan and a Catholic. He was enrolled in Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana, where his father was an assistant coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a school with which he remains connected.

Jon Gruden graduated from the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s in communications, where he was a backup quarterback for the Flyers under coach Mike Kelly for three years. Despite receiving little playing time, Gruden's Flyers teams posted a 24-7 record during his three years at the University of Dayton. He received his bachelor's degree in communications in 1986.
